Hello and Welcome to Under the Fig Tree Media!
I am Jeff Figgs, Senior Pastor of Calvary Chapel of Greeley. I have had the blessing of teaching the Word of God for the last 28 years. In that time, I have taken the congregation of Calvary Chapel Greeley through all 66 books of the Bible. It’s a privilege to have these Bible studies and other resources available to help you be established and built up in the Word of God.
I was ordained at Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1992, where I served as an assistant pastor. In January of 1996, the Lord led my wife Sue and I to Greeley, Colorado, where we started a Bible study in our living room. A short time later Calvary Chapel Greeley had its first Sunday morning service in downtown Greeley. Since then, we have moved to our current facility with multiple weekly services.
Along with teaching verse-by-verse through the entire Bible, I have a radio program “Under the Fig Tree” and I help host the call-in program “Calvary Live “on GraceFM Colorado. Since 2002 I have served as a chaplain to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.
Sue and I have been married for over 30 years and have four adult children: Barbara, Luke, Rachael, and David and a beautiful granddaughter Myla.
My Journey
I graduated from Colorado State University in 1983 and ended up living in Black Forest, Colorado. I was living in a little cabin that I rented from an elderly couple that needed help with their property and main house. During the seven years I lived there I was frustrated that God had not opened doors for me to get a job in the field of natural resource management.
In that season God was working in me and preparing me for the call that He would put on my life. I learned about serving and commitment. It was a season where I was growing in the Word of God as I was attending a Calvary Chapel that taught verse by verse through the Bible. I would listen to many teaching on cassette tapes through books of the Bible.
As time went on, I had a real desire to serve the Lord but didn’t think He could use someone like me. I had a heart to share God’s Word, but I felt there was no way He would use someone without formal education such as seminary and especially someone who had a bit of a speech impediment.
After I married Sue, I moved from Black Forest to Colorado Springs and served at the Calvary Chapel we were attending. I did whatever needed to be done from cleaning to getting supplies for the church. I would make schedules for the different ministries. I just made myself available to do what needed to be done.
In 1992 Brian Michaels, the Senior Pastor of Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel, asked me to come on staff as an Assistant Pastor. In January of 1996, Sue and I loaded up our two young kids and came to Greeley, Colorado where we started Calvary Chapel Greeley in our home. We are so thankful for the work that God has done in these last 28 years. He has allowed us to have a radio program, “Under the Fig Tree” and I help host “Calvary Live” a live call-in show. I have had the privilege to be a Chaplain for the Weld County Sheriff’s Office since 2002. One of my life verses has been 1Corinthians 1:27-28:
But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the [m]base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence.
My heart is for God’s people to grow in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ and to know that He can use us in powerful ways as we trust the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Vision
My prayer is that this website “Under the Fig Tree Media “will help you grow in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. It is our desire to see you be rooted and built up in God’s Word. We hope your heart is strengthened and comforted with the books, devotions and blogs that are available on this site.
We also pray that this would be a resource to pass along to others that want to study the books of the Bible or need encouragement from His Word. It is our desire to help you minister the gospel of Jesus Christ and the truth of God’s Word to others.
